Bhagat Dhanna Ji - 1415

  1. Bhagat Dhanna Ji was born into a poor Hindu family and was a farmer. Every day, he would walk to his farm and water his crops. He worked very hard and earned an honest living.

  2. On his way to the farm, he would see a Brahmin Pundit (Hindu Priest) praying to a stone idol called a ‘Thakur’ which is another name for Vaheguru.

  3. One day, he saw the Pundit feeding the stone idol. Bhagat Dhanna Ji was confused as to why the Pundit was trying to feed a stone so he decided to ask the Pundit.

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “What are you doing?”

Pundit: “Nothing, I’m just feeding my Thakur.”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “Why are you feeding a stone?”

Pundit: “This is not a stone! It is God! It is Thakur!”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “Oh sorry, I didn’t know it was God. What happens when you feed Thakur?”

Pundit: “Thakur gives you everything if you feed it. Now please can you go away, I have a lot to do.”

  4. Bhagat Dhanna Ji liked the idea of feeding a stone and getting everything you want.

  5. Bhagat Dhanna Ji asked the Pundit if he could have a Thakur. The Pundit picked up a stone from the floor and said “Here, first feed Thakur and then eat yourself. Now goodbye”. Bhagat Dhanna Ji took Thakur home.

  6. As soon as Bhagat Dhanna Ji got home, he bathed the stone. He then cooked his favourite meal and brought it to the stone.

  7. He then said “Here Thakur Ji, please eat this food, I have made it lovingly for you. After you have eaten, I want to discuss many things with you”. Bhagat Dhanna Ji sat in front of the stone waiting for it to eat the food.

  8. The stone did not eat the food so Bhagat Dhanna Ji said “Thakur Ji, please eat because I can only eat after you do”. Bhagat Dhanna Ji waited and waited until it was dark.

  9. Bhagat Dhanna Ji thought that God was angry with him and that’s why the stone is not eating the food. Bhagat Dhanna Ji said “I am sorry if I have made any mistakes, please forgive me Thakur Ji. We can discuss my mistakes after you have eaten”.

  10. Bhagat Dhanna Ji waited for another couple of hours until it was morning. The food was still in the plate. Bhagat Dhanna Ji then got angry and started shouting at the stone.

  11. After shouting at the stone, he started crying for getting angry at the stone which he thought was Vaheguru. He then hugged the stone and said sorry. He showed a lot of love and still waited for the stone to eat the food.

  12. Another 2 nights passed, and Bhagat Dhanna Ji was still waiting for the stone to eat its food. Bhagat Dhanna Ji had not eaten for 2 days as he was waiting for the stone to eat first.

  13. On the third night, Bhagat Dhanna Ji was very weak and hungry. Suddenly, at Amrit Vela, a young man appeared in front of Bhai Dhanna Ji. The young man said “Sorry I am late, Dhanna”.

  14. Bhagat Dhanna realised that it was Vaheguru and said “Thakur Ji, let me warm up the food for you”. Vaheguru had come to meet Bhagat Dhanna Ji to stop him from dying of hunger.

  15. Bhagat Dhanna Ji fell in love with the young man, through whom Vaheguru spoke to him. He spent the next few days with Vaheguru. Every night, Bhagat Dhanna Ji would hold Vaheguru’s hand and listen to Vaheguru sing.

  16. Through the young man, Vaheguru would help Bhagat Dhanna Ji on the farm and would help take care of the cows.

  17. A week later, Bhagat Dhanna Ji saw the Pundit walk past his house. Bhagat Dhanna Ji ran outside and said “Oh Pundit, you are the most wonderful person, I cannot thank you enough for giving me Thakur Ji”.

Pundit: “What are you talking about? Look, I am in a hurry, I don’t have time to talk.”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “Wait! You must come and drink some lassi first. Thakur Ji makes the best lassi.”

Pundit: “What?! Thakur Ji makes lassi? How?”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “Yes! Right now, Thakur Ji is ploughing the fields, after he’s done, he will make us delicious lassi.”

Pundit: “Where is Thakur? Who is controlling the cows?”

  18. Bhagat Dhanna Ji was confused and realised that the Pundit could not see Vaheguru. Bhagat Dhanna Ji said “I will ask Thakur Ji why you cannot see him.” The Pundit left feeling really confused.  Bhagat Dhanna Ji then went to Vaheguru.

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “Thakur Ji, how come Pundit Ji couldn’t see you?

Vaheguru: “The Pundit couldn’t see me because he didn’t want to see me. He is more interested in my maid.”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “You have a maid? Who’s your maid?”

Vaheguru: “My maid is Maya, she is really beautiful and the people of the world fall in love with her instead of me.”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “So how can someone begin to see you? How can someone fall in love with you, instead of Maya?”

Vaheguru: “You have to become pure and truthful to see me.”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “How do you become pure? How do you become truthful?

Vaheguru: “In the age of Kaljug, the only way to become pure and truthful is by chanting the Naam.”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “Naam? What’s the Naam?”

Vaheguru: “Naam is the only truth in this world. By chanting it with full concentration, you will become truthful and will be able to see me.”

Bhagat Dhanna Ji: “But I have never recited the Naam, how come I can still see you?”

  19. Vaheguru walked to Bhagat Dhanna Ji and touched his forehead. After this, Bhagat Dhanna Ji saw all of his previous lives.

  20. In his previous life, he found the True Naam and had chanted it for a long time. Seeing Vaheguru was his reward for chanting Naam in his previous life.

  21. Bhagat Dhanna Ji fell to Vaheguru’s feet and said “Thakur Ji, forgive me, I worshipped a stone instead of worshipping you”.

  22. Vaheguru picked up Bhagat Dhanna Ji and said “The way you see me now is not my true form, I only came as a young man to stop you from dying of hunger.

  23. The true way of meeting me is on the inside. When you do Naam Simran, I will meet you inside and we can be together forever”. After saying this, the young man disappeared.

  24. Bhagat Dhanna Ji started crying as the love of his life had gone. He began his mission to meet Vaheguru by starting Naam Simran.

  25. Every day, Bhagat Dhanna Ji would wake up at Amrit Vela and chant the Naam with each breath. 24 hours a day Bhagat Dhanna Ji would cry out for Vaheguru.

  26. Within a couple of days, Bhagat Dhanna Ji’s Dasam Duaar opened and Vaheguru was Pargat (revealed) in his mind. When the Dasam Duaar opens…

Note: Whenever we meet Guru Granth Sahib Ji and do Matha Tek, we also meet and do Matha Tek to Bhagat Naamdev Ji & Bhagat Dhanna Ji as their Bani is inside Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Morals of Story:

  • “The ignorant fools pick up stones and worship them. But when those stones themselves sink, who will carry you across?” ~ SGGS Ji (Ang 556). Guru Ji clearly tells us that worshipping stones is worthless.

  • We should ask for forgiveness from Vaheguru if we make mistakes. As long as we love Vaheguru from the heart, and are truly sorry, Vaheguru will forgive us. There is no point in asking for forgiveness and then making the same mistake again on purpose.

  • Vaheguru themselves come to save his Sikhs when they are in trouble.

  • Vaheguru makes tasty lassi.

  • There are only 2 types of people in this world. Manmukhs and Gurmukhs. Manmukhs love Maya. Gurmukhs love Vaheguru.

  • “Without the Naam, know that this world is false” ~ SGGS Ji (Ang 703). Naam is the only truth in this world. If we want to become truthful, we must chant the Naam.

  • “Without the Naam, no one is liberated” ~ SGGS Ji (Ang 481). We can only reach Vaheguru by doing Naam Simran.

  • “She is so beautiful, she attracts the mind” ~ SGGS Ji (Ang 392). If we become attached to Maya, we will never reach Vaheguru.

  • Only those that have opened their Dasam Duaar know what it feels like. The feeling cannot be described in words.
