Bhai Uday Singh is the third Son of Bhai Mani Singh Ji. Bhai Bachittar Singh Ji is Bhai Sahib’s younger brother.
Bhai Sahib received Amrit from Guru Gobind Singh Ji on Vaisakhi 1699 along with his father and 4 brothers.
Bhai Sahib, along with Bhai Bachittar Singh Ji, was one of 25 Singhs selected by Guru Ji to escort Guru Ji and stand guard at night.
Bhai Sahib was one of Guru Ji’s best warriors. He was both a saint and a soldier.

One day, Guru Ji and a few other Sikhs, including Bhai Uday Singh and Bhai Alam Singh, were walking together when they were attacked by the armies of 2 Hill Rajas.
The 2 Hill Rajas, named Balia Chand and Alam Chand, charged with their armies towards Guru Ji and his Sikhs.
During the battle, Bhai Alam Singh fought with Alam Chand. Bhai Sahib managed to chop off Alam Chand’s right arm with a single swing of his Kirpan.
Bhai Uday Singh ran towards the other Hill Raja, Balia Chand, and shot him at close range.
Both Hill Rajas were seriously injured so the rest of their armies ran away into the jungle.
Guru Ji reminded the Singhs not to attack as the Khalsa never attacks from behind.
Guru Ji praised Bhai Uday Singh and Bhai Alam Singh for putting a stop to the attack by injuring the Hill Rajas.

In 1700, the Mughals were scared at the rate at which Sikhi was growing so they decided to attack Guru Ji.
The 2 generals, Painde Khan and Din Beg both brought 5000 men to attack Guru Ji in the Battle of Anandpur.
The day before the battle, Sahibzaada Ajit Singh Ji, at the age of 12, asked Bhai Uday Singh to get permission from Guru Sahib so that he could also fight in the Battle.
Bhai Uday Singh asked Guru Ji if Baba Ajit Singh Ji could fight in the battle. Guru Ji accepted Bhai Sahib’s request and asked Bhai Sahib to accompany Baba Ji with 100 Singhs.
The next day, Bhai Sahib went to battle alongside the young Baba Ajit Singh Ji. The Khalsa defeated Painde Khan’s and Din Beg’s armies.
Bhai Uday Singh and Baba Ji fought fearlessly during the battle. However, Bhai Sahib was seriously injured during the fight. Bhai Sahib went on to make a full recovery and continued to serve Guru Gobind Singh Ji until his last breath.
Note: It was during the First Battle of Anandpur that Guru Gobind Singh Ji killed Painde Khan by shooting an arrow into his head (As shown in the Chaar Sahibzaade movie). Painde Khan’s 5000 men were then put under the command of Din Beg.

The Hill Rajas were getting very concerned about Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s rising power. They came together and planned to attack Guru Ji at Anandpur Sahib.
They attacked Guru Ji and the battle started. The battle went on for weeks but the Hill Rajas were not able to defeat Guru Ji’s army. They had to come up with another plan.
There are 5 forts of Anandpur Sahib. Guru Ji was in Lohgarh Fort at the time of the attack. Lohgarh Fort was well-known for its strong gates which were really hard to break down.
However, Parmanand came up with the idea of sending a drunken elephant covered in iron plates to Lohgarh Fort to break down the gates. Raja Kesri Chand, supported this idea and was sure that this would work.
Bhai Bachittar Singh was sent by Guru Ji to stop the drunken elephant. Bhai Sahib stabbed the elephant with a Nagni Barsha (Spear) and the elephant stormed in the opposite direction and killed many of Raja Kesri Chand’s men.
Raja Kesri Chand had to retreat his men until the elephant died. Kesri Chand was really angry as he got his own men killed.
Kesri Chand shouted towards Lohgarh Fort and delivered a message to the Sikhs saying he will cut off Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s head and take it with him on a stick.
After hearing this, Bhai Uday Singh got really angry. Bhai Sahib couldn’t sit still after hearing someone speak of Guru Ji in such a way.
Bhai Sahib went to Guru Ji and said “Guru Ji, please give your servant permission to bring you Kesri Chand’s head”. Guru Ji smiled at Bhai Uday Singh and gave him permission.
Bhai Uday Singh came out of the fort and looked Kesri Chand in the eyes. Bhai Sahib shouted at Kesri Chand for speaking badly about Guru Ji and told him “You said you will cut off my Guru’s head but let’s see you try to cut off his Sikh’s head first”.
Bhai Sahib fought Kesri Chand and in one swing of his sword, cut off Kesri Chand’s head. Bhai Sahib shouted a loud Jakara “Bole So Nihaal, Sat Sri Akaal!”.
Bhai Sahib put Kesri Chand’s head on a spear, carried it back to the fort and placed it in front of Guru Ji. Bhai Sahib then did Matha Tek to Guru Ji.
Kesri Chand’s army retreated and the Hill Rajas were defeated once again.
That day, Guru Ji was extremely proud of the bravery of the 2 warrior brothers, Bhai Bachittar Singh and Bhai Uday Singh.

In December 1704, Aurengzeb and the Hill Rajas came together and attacked Anandpur Sahib. They surrounded Anandpur Sahib for 7 months.
After 7 months, they swore on the Quran and the holy cow and told Guru Ji that if he got out of Anandpur Sahib then they will not attack him and his Sikhs. They broke their promise and attacked the Sikhs from behind.
When the Sikhs reached the Sirsa River, the Mughals were not far behind. Baba Ajit Singh Ji and a few other Singhs were fighting the Mughal and Hill Raja soldiers and stopping them from reaching the Sangat.
Guru Ji looked up into the sky and saw the stars shining. Guru Ji realised that it is Amritvela. Guru Ji told the Sikhs “The stars are shining brightly in the sky, it is time for Nitnem and Asa di Vaar”.
Guru Ji told the Sangat “I need a head today. I need someone to go into the battlefield and fight alongside Baba Ajit Singh Ji until Nitnem and Asa di Vaar is complete. Who is brave enough to go?”.
Bhai Uday Singh stood up and told Guru Ji “Maharaaj, give me permission to go out there and fight to protect the Sangat”.
Guru Ji gave Hukam to Bhai Uday Singh “Go to Baba Ajit Singh Ji and fight the Mughal and Hill Raja soldiers. Not a single Mughal or Hill Raja soldier should disrupt the Divaan. And one more thing, tell Baba Ajit Singh Ji to come back as he is not meant to be Shaheed yet”. Bhai Sahib accepted Guru Ji’s Hukam. Guru Ji tapped Bhai Sahib on the back and gave Bhai Sahib blessings.
As Bhai Sahib set off to where the battle was happening, Bhai Sahib looked back at Guru Ji. Guru Ji told him “Uday Singh, cut through everyone you see, don’t spare any of them but keep Vaheguru in your mind”. Bhai Sahib did Matha Tek and set off to where Baba Ajit Singh Ji was fighting.
Bhai Uday Singh took out his bow and arrow and started piercing through the enemy. Everyone was afraid of Bhai Sahib after he had beheaded Kesri Chand a few years earlier.
Whilst Baba Ajit Singh Ji, Bhai Uday Singh and a few other Sikhs fought the thousands of Mughal and Hill Raja soldiers, Guru Ji himself sang Asa di Vaar using a Rabaab (String instrument).
All around the Sangat, there was shouting and blood but everything turned into bliss when Guru Ji themselves sang Gurbani in the form of Kirtan. All the Sangat listened peacefully.
Whilst Nitnem and Asa di Vaar were being done, Bhai Uday Singh told Baba Ajit Singh Ji to go back to Guru Ji. Bhai Uday Singh carried on fighting the Mughals and Hill Raja soldiers.
After killing many of the Mughal and Hill Raja soldiers, Bhai Sahib was surrounded by thousands of soldiers. It was difficult for the enemy to get to Bhai Sahib as he was surrounded with thousands of heads that he had chopped off.
Eventually, the soldiers closed in on Bhai Sahib and cut him into pieces. Bhai Sahib had completed his mission and went to Sach Khand.
After killing Bhai Uday Singh, Bhai Jeevan Singh's Jatha stopped the Mughals from reaching the Sangat whilst the Sangat crossed the Sirsa River.
Bhai Uday Singh was a fearless warrior who was responsible for saving all of the Sangat that night. Bhai Sahib gave up their life for Guru Ji and the Sangat. He was a true Saint Soldier.

Never attack someone from behind.
Always get permission from Guru Ji before carrying out a task by doing an Ardas.
Guru Ji supports their Sikh in every task.
Never remain silent when someone disrespects Guru Ji.
Don’t trust someone just because they have taken an oath. They can easily break it. This is one of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s 52 Hukams.
Nitnem is crucial. It should not be missed, even if you’re going through difficult times.
Amrit Vela is crucial. It should not be missed, even if you’re going through difficult times.
We should be willing to give our head for the Guru when it is needed.
Always keep Vaheguru in your mind, even whilst you’re doing a difficult task.
When Guru Ji gives us blessings, nothing can stop us from completing our task.
