Arrest of Bhai Taru Singh Ji
-
Zakaria Khan was a cruel Mughal leader and many Singhs were getting together to fight Zakaria Khan. Zakaria Khan knew this and so started to punish all the Sikhs.
-
Zakaria Khan asked his men, “How are Sikhs still living? I have stopped them from working, they are not allowed to farm and they cannot do business. I have stopped offerings to their Gurdwara so why do they not die of hunger?”.
-
Harbhagat, a man who hated Sikhs, said, “In the village of Poohla lives Taru Singh. He grows food but eats very little and sends the rest to the Sikhs in the jungle. His mother and daughter do the same”.
-
Zakaria Khan ordered the arrest of Bhai Taru Singh Ji. When the soldiers arrived at Poohla, they went straight to Bhai Taru Singh’s house. Bhai Taru Singh agreed to go with the soldiers but he first requested them to eat at his house.
-
Then, Bhai Taru Singh Ji was taken to Lahore where he was asked to reveal where the Singhs were hiding. Bhai Taru Singh Ji refused and was tortured in many ways.

Shaheedi of Bhai Taru Singh Ji
-
After being tortured, Bhai Taru Singh Ji was taken to Zakaria Khan’s court where Bhai Taru Singh Ji greeted the Emperor by saying “Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh".
-
Bhai Taru Singh Ji asked Zakaria Khan why he was arrested. Zakaria Khan told Bhai Sahib that he was arrested for giving food to the Singhs. He then told Bhai Taru Singh Ji that he had to choose between conversion to Islam or death.
-
Bhai Taru Singh Ji said “Will I not die if I become Muslim? We all will die someday and so why should I not die defending my religion?”.
-
Zakaria Khan got angry and ordered Bhai Taru Singh Ji to be put on the Charkhree (wheels) so he could be crushed to death. Bhai Taru Singh Ji accepted.

-
After being put on the Charkhree, Bhai Sahib's bones were broken but Bhai Sahib was still alive. The Mughals carried Bhai Sahib back to Zakariya Khan's court. Zakariya Khan was shocked to see Bhai Sahib alive. Zakariya Khan ordered Bhai Sahib's scalp to be removed.
-
When the executioner was going to remove Bhai Sahib's scalp, he was going to put a ribbon around Bhai Sahib's head to stop Bhai Sahib moving around when his scalp is being removed.
-
Bhai Sahib stopped the executioner and said "Do I look like a sheep to you? I am a Singh, I won't jump around in pain like your sheep do when you slaughter them by cutting their throat".
-
The executioner didn't tie the ribbon and Bhai Sahib sat there chanting 'Vaheguru' whilst his scalp was removed.
-
After his scalp was removed, Bhai Sahib was taken to Zakariya Khan. Zakariya Khan told his men to throw Bhai Sahib on the street to die. Before being taken away, Bhai Taru Singh Ji said to Zakaria Khan, “My death will come after yours”.
-
From that day on, Zakaria Khan was not able to urinate and then started crying in pain. All the doctors had failed to help Zakaria Khan. As a last resort, Zakaria Khan said sorry to every Sikh.
-
A Sikh called Bhai Subeg Singh told Zakaria Khan that he had to hit his scalp with Bhai Taru Singh Ji’s shoe to urinate. Zakaria Khan begged for Bhai Taru Singh Ji’s shoe.
-
Bhai Taru Singh Ji was with other Sikhs who had found him thrown on the street. Bhai Subeg Singh himself went to Bhai Taru Singh Ji to get his shoe. As soon as Zakariya Khan hit himself with the shoe, he was able to urinate.
-
After a few days, Zakaria Khan passed away as he had hit himself in the head so many times.
-
When Bhai Taru Singh Ji was told about the death of Zakaria Khan, he also breathed his last breath and became Shaheed.
