In 1675, the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb wanted everyone in India to convert to Islam and punished those that did not. He was a very evil man.
The Hindus were very weak so Aurangzeb knew that he could convert them all. Aurangzeb realised that if he converted the Kashmiri Pandits then thousands of their Hindu followers would also convert.
Aurangzeb told the Kashmiri Pandits “You have 3 options. Convert to Islam, Die or sacrifice a Mahapurakh (Enlightened being)”. The Kashmiri Pandits could not fight the powerful Aurangzeb so they went to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji for help.
When the Pandits told Guru Ji about their problem, Guru Ji was shocked and started to think about what could be done. Gobind Rai, Guru Ji's son, walked into the Darbar and asked Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji what the Kashmiri Pandits were here for. Gobind Rai was only 9 at this time.
When Gobind Rai heard the problem, he said "Pita Ji, there is an easy answer. You are the biggest Mahapurakh on this earth. You should make the sacrifice".
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji immediately told the Kashmiri Pandits “Go and tell Aurangzeb that if he can convert Guru Tegh Bahadur to Islam, they will all convert. Otherwise he should leave the Hindus alone".
Guru Ji set off to Delhi with Bhai Mati Das Ji, Bhai Sati Das Ji and Bhai Dyaala Ji to face Aurangzeb. As soon as they arrived, they were asked to convert to Islam or face death. Guru Ji refused straight away. Guru Ji was then put in a cage and tortured.
While Guru Ji was locked up in a cage, Bhai Dyaala Ji was brought in front of Guru Ji and placed in a cauldron of boiling water after refusing to convert to Islam. Bhai Dyaala Ji remained calm and carried on chanting “Vaheguru”.
Then, Bhai Mati Das Ji was brought in front of Guru Ji and asked to convert to Islam or be cut into two. Bhai Mati Das Ji refused. The Mughals asked Bhai Mati Das Ji for a final wish and he said “When I am being cut in half, let me face my Guru so I can remember him till my very last breath”. Bhai Sahib was cut in half, in front of Guru Ji.
Later, Bhai Sati Das Ji was brought in front of Guru Ji and the Mughals said to him “Convert to Islam and live in pleasure”. Bhai Sati Das Ji replied “My pleasure and happiness lie only in following my Guru”. After hearing this Aurangzeb’s men wrapped Bhai Sati Das Ji in cotton, poured oil over him and set him on fire.
Finally, after refusing to convert to Islam, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was beheaded in Chandni Chowk, Delhi.
