One day a rich banker gifted Guru Amar Das Ji a pearl necklace. Guru Ji said that he was too old to wear a pearl necklace.
Guru Amar Das Ji told the rich banker to give the necklace to someone who looks like him the most. The banker did not know what to do so he asked Guru Amar Das Ji to pick someone who looked like him the most.
The Sangat thought that Guru Ji would give it to one of his 2 sons, as they looked like him the most.
Instead, Guru Amar Das Ji asked Bhai Jetha Ji to stand up and come to him. Guru Amar Das Ji put the necklace around Bhai Jetha Ji and said “Bhai Jetha looks like me from the inside and outside”. Bhai Jetha Ji bowed down to Guru Ji.
Morals of Story:
Guru Ji gives all his gifts to his Sikhs
A Guru's Sikh is pure from the inside and the outside
Guru Amar Das Ji talks about purity in Anand Sahib:
Those who are outwardly pure and yet polluted within, lose their lives in the gamble (uselessly).
They contract this terrible disease of desire, and in their minds, they forget about dying.
In the Vedas, the ultimate objective is the Naam, the Name of the Lord; but they do not hear this, and they wander around like demons. ~ Anand Sahib (Pauri 19)
Those who are outwardly pure and also pure within, through the Guru, perform good deeds.
Not even a tiny bit of falsehood touches them; their hopes are absorbed in the Truth.
Those who earn the jewel of this human life, are the most excellent of merchants.
Says Nanak, those whose minds are pure, abide with the Guru forever. ~ Anand Sahib (Pauri 20)

Guru Amar Das Ji asked both of his son-in-laws to make a platform for him to sit on. Whoever built the best platform would receive Guru Ji's blessing. Both, Bhai Jetha Ji and Bhai Rama Ji, got to work.
Guru Ji looked at Bhai Rama Ji's platform and told him to build it again as it was not good enough. Bhai Rama Ji built another platform but Guru Ji shook his head and told him to start again. Eventually, Bhai Rama started arguing with Guru Ji and refused to build another one.
Guru Ji went to look at Bhai Jetha Ji's platform and told him to build it again. When Bhai Jetha Ji built it a second time Guru Ji again shook his head and told him to build it again. This happened over and over again.
When Bhai Jetha made the seventh platform Guru Ji again shook his head and told him to build it again. Bhai Jetha Ji fell at Guru Ji's feet and said “I am a fool, I keep making mistakes and you have been very patient with me. Forgive me Guru Ji”.
Guru Amar Das Ji turned to the Sangat and said “Bhai Jetha Ji, you have built the platform seven times so seven generations of yours shall sit on the Guru’s throne”. The Guruship was passed down Guru Ram Das Ji's family, all the way to Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Morals of Story:
Never get angry at Guru Ji, there is a reason they are doing things.
Always follow Guru Ji's hukam.
Never think you know more than Guru Ji.
Below is the Guru Family Tree. It shows how the Guruship was passed down Guru Ram Das Ji's family.

Baba Sri Chand was Guru Nanak Dev Ji's son. He left Guru Ji because Guru Ji did not pass the Guruship to him. He started his own group called the Udhasis.
After many years had passed, Baba Sri Chand had heard many great things about Guru Ram Das Ji and so decided to go meet him. When Guru Ram Das Ji heard that Baba Sri Chand was here, he went to Baba Sri Chand himself and invited him to his house.
As they were talking, Baba Sri Chand pointed towards Guru Ji’s beard and asked “Why is your beard so long?”.
Guru Ram Das Ji replied that his long beard was to wipe the feet of holy men like Baba Sri Chand. Guru Ji got down and started to wipe Baba Sri Chand's feet with his beard.
Baba Sri Chand quickly got up and realised the greatness of the humble Guru and agreed that his father, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, was right.
Baba Sri Chand thanked Guru Ji and asked to leave. When he was leaving, Guru Ram Das Ji offered him 500 rupees and an Arabian horse as a gift.
The Udhasis went on to serve the Gurus. Guru Ji respected the Udhasis as they were good people but they were not considered Sikhs.
Note: Udhasi is a separate religion created by Baba Sri Chand when his father, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, refused to make Baba Sri Chand Guru.
Morals of Story:
Guru Ji has humility and so should we.
Never doubt Guru Ji.
One of the best Seva to kill your ego is to clean the shoes of the Sangat.
Guru Ji gives gifts to those that love others and realise the truth.
